Four-time Grand Slam champion Carlos Alcaraz weighed in on the ongoing controversy surrounding Jannik Sinner’s positive steroid tests, expressing concern for both the player and the sport. While acknowledging the potential negative impact on the image of tennis, Alcaraz also voiced his empathy for Sinner, who has been thrust into the spotlight following the positive tests for clostebol.
Alcaraz addressed the situation during the China Open, where he reached the quarterfinals. He recognized the difficult position Sinner finds himself in, stating, “I think for tennis it’s not really good, not really a good sign for tennis in general.”
While some players have expressed skepticism about Sinner’s explanation—that the substance entered his system through a physiotherapist’s spray—Alcaraz offered a more sympathetic perspective. He acknowledged the intense scrutiny Sinner faces, particularly after the news broke just before the US Open. “It’s difficult for him. I know everyone is talking about it, the news is talking about it,” Alcaraz said. “Probably as he said before New York (US Open), people started to look at him in a different way.”
Alcaraz further expressed his understanding of Sinner’s current situation, stating, “I don’t know how it can be, but for sure I understand the position. I feel (for) him.” Despite the controversy, Alcaraz highlighted Sinner’s incredible performance level, calling it “insane” considering the circumstances.
Alcaraz concluded by expressing his hope that the situation will be resolved soon, allowing Sinner to focus on what he loves—playing tennis. “I hope that this thing… will be aside soon and he’s able to stay focused on what he loves, and that is playing tennis, trying to keep going,” Alcaraz said.
Sinner is currently competing at the China Open, where he faces Jiri Lehecka of the Czech Republic on Monday. The outcome of the WADA appeal and its potential consequences remain to be seen, but Alcaraz’s supportive stance underlines the complexity and sensitivity of the situation.
