Counterfeit Botox Injections Sicken 22 Across 11 States
U.S. health officials have issued a warning about counterfeit Botox injections that have sickened 22 people across 11 states. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that half of the affected individuals have required hospitalization.
The cases, which began appearing in November 2023, involve injections administered by unlicensed or untrained individuals in settings such as homes or spas. Most recipients sought botulinum toxin for cosmetic reasons.
Botulinum toxin, a component of Botox, can cause botulism when it enters the bloodstream. This rare but potentially deadly disease manifests with symptoms such as double vision, drooping eyelids, slurred speech, swallowing difficulties, and breathing problems.
The CDC emphasizes that Botox injections should be administered solely by licensed professionals. Individuals who have recently received injections and experience any botulism symptoms should seek immediate emergency medical attention.
To ensure the legitimacy of Botox providers, health officials recommend utilizing state license-lookup tools. Reporting any suspected counterfeit products or adverse reactions is crucial to prevent further harm.
