The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) and Alipay+, managed by Ant International, have announced plans to strengthen their partnership and introduce new digital innovations aimed at enhancing the travel experience in Thailand, especially for Chinese tourists.
Mr. Chattan Kunjara Na Ayudhya, TAT Deputy Governor for International Marketing – Asia and the South Pacific, emphasized the importance of the partnership with Alipay+ in attracting tourists and ensuring a positive experience for them in Thailand. He expressed confidence that the partnership will contribute to achieving TAT’s 2024 goals and noted the significant growth in Alipay+ transactions.
TAT and Alipay+ are introducing the Alipay+ D-hub and the Amazing Thailand e-Card to provide Chinese tourists with convenient access to local businesses and exclusive deals. Alipay+ D-hub is an in-app mini program offering comprehensive travel information, including local recommendations and city guides. The Amazing Thailand e-Card connects tourists with local businesses, providing increased visibility for the tourism sector and enabling tourists to discover new experiences.
Alipay+ has also launched Alipay+ D-store in Thailand, allowing locals and tourists to conveniently scan a QR code at a store, customize their order, and pay directly via their mobile devices. Notable participating merchants include Dairy Queen and Burger King.
Mr. Edward Yue, General Manager, Southeast Asia, Australia and New Zealand & Global Strategic Partnerships, Ant International, highlighted the success of the partnership and the positive impact it brings to the community. He expressed excitement about the new innovations and their potential to enhance the travel experience for mobile-savvy travelers by enabling them to fully immerse themselves in Thai culture.
From January to April 2024, Thailand welcomed over 12 million international visitors, with transaction volumes through Alipay+ surging by 70% compared to the last four months of 2023. This growth was primarily driven by transactions from Alipay (Chinese mainland), Touch ‘n Go eWallet (Malaysia), AlipayHK (Hong Kong SAR), and Kakao Pay (South Korea).
Alipay+ has expanded its acceptance network to over 400,000 merchants nationwide, including remote areas. New merchants include various F&B outlets, wellness centers, and popular attractions such as the food stalls at CentralWorld, Let’s Relax Spa, and the Grand Palace. Alipay+ will also soon be available on the Bangkok Mass Transit System (BTS), offering a convenient payment option for transportation.
TAT and Alipay+ are launching a campaign titled “A Thailand+ Experience” to showcase the diverse and unique experiences available to tourists in Thailand. Key Opinion Leaders (KOLs) will feature their preferred local merchants in secondary cities, and national voucher packs will be offered to encourage exploration and spending in these areas.
