Aljamain Sterling Wins at UFC 300, Sparking BMF Title Debate
Aljamain Sterling’s impressive performance in his featherweight debut at UFC 300 has raised questions about his potential to challenge for the BMF title. Sterling dominated Calvin Kattar in a unanimous decision victory, leading former UFC champion Daniel Cormier to suggest that the “Funk Master” deserves a shot at Max Holloway’s belt.
Cormier Advocates for Sterling’s Title Shot
On the latest episode of “Good Guy / Bad Guy,” Cormier argued, “If anybody is a BMF, they can do what ‘Aljo’ did at UFC 300. You go up a weight class, you dominate somebody in the grappling like that, that’s a BMF, Ryan. Put ‘Aljo’ in the next title fight.”
Clark Criticizes Sterling’s Performance
However, Sterling’s victory did not impress former Pittsburgh Steelers safety Ryan Clark. Clark dismissed the fight as “boring,” stating, “That’s what the BMF would stand for if Aljamain Sterling was the new BMF champion (laughs).”
Despite Clark’s criticism, Sterling’s victory marked a significant comeback after his loss to Sean O’Malley in August. The 34-year-old admitted that another defeat would have likely ended his career. However, at 145 pounds, Sterling proved that he still has the skills to compete at the highest level.
Debate Continues
The debate over Sterling’s worthiness for a BMF title shot is likely to continue. While Cormier believes that Sterling’s grappling dominance warrants consideration, Clark argues that the fight lacked the excitement expected of a BMF title contender. Ultimately, it remains to be seen whether Sterling will get the opportunity to challenge Holloway for the championship.
