A proposal to split Utah’s largest school district, Alpine School District, into two smaller districts is being considered, with a possible ballot measure in November. Officials from MGT Consulting, hired by the district to conduct a reconfiguration study, have recommended a two-way split after gathering feedback from residents on various scenarios. The proposed split would create two separate districts – one to the east and one to the west – with the only difference being the placement of Lehi.
The recommendation for a two-way split was based on the feedback collected from residents, who overwhelmingly preferred keeping the district as one entity. However, a majority of respondents expressed support for a community-wide vote on the issue. Of the two proposed two-way split options, 56% of all those surveyed favored the option with Lehi in the west. However, residents within the Lehi area showed a strong preference for the scenario where Lehi would be situated in the east.
The Alpine school board is currently considering which of the two proposed two-way split scenarios to take to voters. An official vote on which option will be brought to the ballot is expected in early May. If approved by the school board, the proposed ballot question would then need to be approved by the Utah County Commission and undergo a 45-day public comment period before it could be placed on the November ballot.
