Alstom Delivers Inaugural Metropolis Train for Pune Metro Line 3

Alstom, a global leader in sustainable transportation solutions, has announced the delivery of the inaugural Metropolis metro train for Pune Metro Line 3, constructed at its state-of-the-art facility in Sricity, Andhra Pradesh. These trains, entirely produced in India, boast a maximum speed of 85km/h and are designed to link the IT center of Hinjewadi with the central business area of Shivajinagar in Pune, Maharashtra’s second most populous city.

Commenting at the handover ceremony, Olivier Loison, Managing Director – Alstom India said, “We are thrilled to be contributing to this prestigious project by Tata Group. We are confident that our locally manufactured technologically advanced Metropolis metro trains will play a key role in enhancing the quality of life of the citizens and the overall development of the city. At Alstom, we focus on developing sustainable products and solutions that stand the test of time by operating efficiently for decades to come.”

Spanning approximately 23 kilometers, Pune Metro Line 3 is an elevated rail initiative bridging the IT zone of Hinjawadi with Shivajinagar’s central business district. This project is a collaborative venture between the Tata Group and the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA), formed under a Public Private Partnership (PPP) model. The Tata Group has formed the Pune IT City Metro Rail Limited as a dedicated entity to oversee the construction of this route, which includes 23 stations.

In 2021, a partnership comprising Alstom India, TRIL Urban Transport Private Limited (a Tata subsidiary), and Siemens Project Ventures GmbH (a part of Siemens Financial Services) was selected to supply rolling stock along with electrical and mechanical systems for the elevated metro track, under a PPP agreement. The project is slated for development and operation based on the Design, Build, Finance, Operate, and Transfer (DBFOT) framework.

Under this contract, Alstom is tasked with producing 22 sets of Metropolis trains, each consisting of three carriages, capable of accommodating up to 1,000 passengers. The names AlstomTM and MetropolisTM are registered trademarks of the Alstom Group.
