Amazon Prime Day, an annual event exclusively for Prime members, kicked off on July 20th, promising two days of “epic deals” on top brands. However, social media buzz suggests that not all deals are living up to the hype.
One user shared a screenshot of a product priced at ₹3,499, available for ₹3,498 during Prime Day, prompting a wave of comments from other users. Another screenshot showed a ₹10 discount on a product initially priced at ₹1,16,000, seemingly an Apple Macbook, resulting in a final price of ₹1,15,990. “Misleading pro max,” commented one user, while another simply stated, “Prime day deals summed up in one picture!”
The skepticism surrounding the deals continued with users sharing their own experiences. One user mentioned waiting for Prime Day to purchase a wireless power bank, only to see the price increase from ₹1600 to ₹1708, with a mere ₹80 cashback offered through their bank. Another user humorously commented, “Kya kijiyega itni dhanrashi ka (what will you do with so much wealth)?” referencing the popular game show “Kaun Banega Crorepati,” highlighting the seemingly insignificant discounts.
A user who had bought a laptop at a 5% credit card discount for ₹56,000, was dismayed to see the same laptop being sold for ₹57,000 on Prime Day without any credit card discounts, further fueling the debate on the authenticity of the deals.
Amazon, however, claims that its discounts are determined through automated systems and strategic planning. Complex algorithms, utilizing historical sales data, competitor prices, and expected demands, calculate the discount rates. While the social media examples may appear misleading, Amazon is offering significant discounts up to 65% in categories such as appliances, electronics, gadgets, and more. One user on Reddit mentioned a 500 rupee discount on Sony XM5 headphones during Prime Day, with additional discounts available for SBI and ICICI cardholders.
Despite the skepticism, it’s important to remember that Amazon Prime Day is a massive event with numerous deals across various products. While some deals might be perceived as insignificant, others may offer significant savings, especially considering the additional discounts available through bank cards and other promotions. It’s crucial for consumers to remain cautious, compare prices, and evaluate deals before making any purchase.
