Online retail giant Amazon announced it intends to shut down the drone delivery program in the only California area participating, according to a news release from the company.
On Monday, Amazon announced the drone delivery site in Lockeford would be closing. The program launched in San Joaquin County in 2022. The company said it intends to offer current employees opportunities at other sites and will continue to serve customers in Lockeford with other delivery methods.
Amazon did not announce when the Lockeford site would shut down or share the reason behind the decision to close. The company said the drone delivery service would continue in the only other current location in College Station, Texas. It will also launch in the Phoenix area later this year. The company said it plans to open more U.S. locations in 2025.
