Amcor, a leading global player in developing and producing responsible packaging solutions, has achieved a major milestone in its sustainability journey. The company’s long-term carbon reduction targets have been approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), a globally recognized organization committed to aligning corporate emissions reduction targets with the latest climate science.
Amcor’s long-term vision is to reach net-zero greenhouse gas emissions across its entire value chain by 2050. This ambitious goal encompasses significant absolute reductions in Scope 1, 2, and 3 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Scope 1 includes direct emissions from sources owned or controlled by Amcor, Scope 2 covers indirect emissions from purchased electricity, and Scope 3 encompasses emissions from the company’s supply chain, including purchased goods and services, transportation, waste management, and end-of-life treatment of sold products.
This recent approval builds upon Amcor’s existing near-term emission reduction targets, which were confirmed earlier in 2024 and are aligned with a 1.5-degree Celsius trajectory. These near-term targets aim for a 54.6% reduction in absolute Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions and a 32.5% reduction in Scope 3 emissions by fiscal year 2033.
“We are thrilled that our long-term targets have been validated, following the approval of our near-term targets earlier this year,” said Amcor Chief Sustainability Officer David Clark. “These targets are a core element of our sustainability strategy and reflect our commitment to delivering packaging that safeguards products, minimizes environmental impact, and supports our customers in their decarbonization ambitions.”
Amcor’s dedication to sustainability is evident in its comprehensive approach to packaging solutions. The company focuses on producing packaging that is increasingly recyclable, reusable, lighter weight, and made using a growing amount of recycled content. This commitment to responsible practices aligns with Amcor’s broader sustainability strategy, which aims to create value for its stakeholders while minimizing its environmental footprint.
This achievement underscores Amcor’s leadership in the packaging industry and its commitment to a sustainable future. By setting ambitious targets and actively working to reduce its environmental impact, Amcor is making significant contributions to addressing the climate crisis and building a more sustainable world.
