AMD’s next-generation processor lineup has officially been confirmed to be marketed under the ‘Ryzen 9000’ moniker, as per Gigabyte’s recent press release. This confirmation debunks previous rumors suggesting a potential ‘Ryzen 8000’ branding for the Zen 5 chips. The release from Gigabyte announces the compatibility of their current AM5 motherboards with AMD’s upcoming processors. Codenamed ‘Granite Ridge,’ the Ryzen 9000 series will be based on the Zen 5 architecture and serve as an upgrade to the Zen 4-based ‘Raphael’ CPUs released in late 2022. While AMD has announced the debut of the first Zen 5 SKUs later this year, rumors indicate a possible showcase at Computex 2024 in June, followed by a release a few months later. In addition to the Granite Ridge desktop processors, Zen 5 is also slated to power the ‘Strix Point’ APUs, expected to release this year. Unlike the Ryzen 9000 series, these APUs are rumored to combine Zen 5 and Zen 5c cores and feature more potent integrated graphics. The Zen 5 architecture is also anticipated to be utilized in the ‘Fire Range’ mobile CPUs and ‘Strix Halo’ APUs, rumored for release in 2025. AMD CEO Dr. Lisa Su has already confirmed the launch of Zen 5-based CPUs for both client and server applications in the second half of 2024. A recent leak suggests that Zen 5 cores could deliver significant performance gains of over 40% compared to Zen 4. Although AMD hasn’t disclosed any official Zen 5 benchmarks, the company claims the chips will provide enhanced performance and efficiency over Zen 4. Other improvements are said to include a revamped front end, integrated AI, and machine learning optimizations. The Zen 5 architecture promises a substantial upgrade over the current-generation processors. The compatibility with existing AM5 motherboards further encourages AMD users to upgrade their systems with the latest CPUs this year.
