American Airlines is gearing up for a significant expansion of its long-haul operations, with a focus on Europe and the Mediterranean. The expansion, set to unfold in the Summer 2025 season, was announced this Thursday and will see the introduction of several new routes starting in March 2025.
The expansion will enhance connectivity from American’s major hubs in Chicago, Philadelphia, Miami, and Charlotte.
New Routes:
*
Chicago O’Hare to Madrid:
Daily flights will begin on March 30, 2025, using the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner.*
Charlotte to Athens:
Daily flights will commence on June 5, 2025, operated by the Boeing 777-200.*
Philadelphia to Edinburgh:
This route will mark the return of American’s Edinburgh service, which was paused in 2019. Daily flights are scheduled to start on May 23, 2025, using the Boeing 787-8.*
Philadelphia to Milan:
Also starting on May 23, 2025, daily flights to Milan will be operated by the Boeing 787-8.*
Miami to Rome:
Expanding American’s presence in the Mediterranean, daily flights from Miami to Rome will commence on July 5, 2025, operated by a Boeing 777-200.
Extended Seasonal Availability:
American will also be extending the seasonal availability of four existing routes:
*
Dallas/Fort Worth to Barcelona:
Starting earlier on March 30, 2025.*
Miami to Paris:
Starting earlier on March 30, 2025.*
Philadelphia to Athens:
Starting on March 30, 2025.*
Philadelphia to Naples:
Starting on May 5, 2025.This expansion comes as American adjusts its overall strategy. Last month, the airline announced that it would reduce capacity on certain long-haul routes, particularly those operating from its Phoenix and Los Angeles hubs to London Heathrow. These reductions are set to take effect later this year.
The expansion of American Airlines’ long-haul operations demonstrates the airline’s commitment to providing enhanced connectivity and travel options for passengers. The new routes and extended seasonal availability will offer travelers more destinations to explore and more flexibility in their travel planning.
