American Battlefield Trust’s History Field Trip Grant Program Surpasses 50,000 Children Served

The American Battlefield Trust’s History Field Trip Grant Program has surpassed an impressive milestone, serving over 50,000 children. This program enables schools to apply for funding to cover the costs of field trips to battlefields, museums, and other historic sites that align with the Trust’s mission.

Since its inception in 2014, the program has funded almost 800 trips, sending students to 205 historic sites in 43 states. Over 60% of the impacted classrooms in 37 states and the District of Columbia are in Title 1 schools, demonstrating the program’s commitment to equitable access to history education.

“We preserve hallowed ground so that this and future generations can use it to learn essential lessons of American history at the places where it unfolded,” said Trust President James Lighthizer. “It leaves a lasting impression when school children can visit historic sites, experience them firsthand, and gain a deeper understanding of the past and its relevance to the present.”

The program has received support from donations made by Trust members, allowing for its steady growth. The application process is ongoing, with funds being disbursed upon receipt of required forms and receipts. Educators from kindergarten through 12th grade are encouraged to apply for grants of up to $1,000 to make memorable trips more accessible for their students.

The American Battlefield Trust’s mission is to preserve America’s battlefields and educate the public about their historical significance. The nonprofit organization has protected over 58,000 acres across 155 sites in 25 states, preserving the legacy of the Revolutionary War, War of 1812, and Civil War.
