While the Congress party has yet to announce its candidate for the Amethi constituency, recent events have fueled speculations about Robert Vadra, the brother-in-law of Rahul Gandhi, contesting from the seat. On Wednesday, posters bearing the slogan “Amethi ki janata kare pukar, Robert Vadra abki baar (Amethi people want Robert Vadra to contest this time)” appeared in various locations, including the Amethi Congress office. These posters have sparked political reactions from both the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) camps.
The posters are linked to Vadra’s recent statements expressing confidence in winning from Amethi with a substantial margin if he were to contest. He also suggested that the people of Amethi would have an opportunity to rectify their mistake of electing Smriti Irani in the previous election. The posters, which surfaced early Wednesday morning, quickly went viral on social media platforms, triggering reactions from both sides of the political divide.
Congress leader Deepak Singh dismissed the posters as a “conspiracy by the Smriti Irani camp,” while the BJP claimed they indicated the aspirations of Congress workers. Reacting to the posters, BJP’s Amethi candidate Smriti Irani stated, “Whether it’s a brother-in-law or a brother, everyone in Amethi is a supporter of Modi.” Irani had previously taken a jibe at Rahul Gandhi and Vadra, suggesting that Vadra had his eyes on the Amethi constituency.
Amethi is set to vote in the fifth phase of the Lok Sabha elections on May 20th. The buzz surrounding Vadra’s potential candidacy has added another layer of intrigue to the political dynamics in Amethi ahead of the upcoming polls.
