Days after the horrific murder of four members of a Dalit family in Amethi, Uttar Pradesh, new details have emerged. The incident, which took place on the evening of October 3, saw the tragic shooting deaths of a 35-year-old Dalit school teacher, his 32-year-old wife, and their two young daughters in the Ahorwa Bhawani area.
Police investigations have revealed a chilling motive behind the crime: an “illicit relationship gone sour.” According to police officials, the main accused, Chandan Verma, was arrested a day after the incident while attempting to flee to Delhi. Superintendent of Police Anoop Kumar Singh confirmed that Verma was apprehended near a toll plaza in Noida.
Chandan Verma was identified as the prime suspect early on, as the school teacher’s wife had previously filed a complaint against him under the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989. During questioning, Verma confessed to the killings, claiming he had been in a relationship with the teacher’s wife, Poonam, for the past 18 months. However, the relationship had deteriorated, leading to intense stress and ultimately, a violent outburst.
Verma reportedly reached the victim’s house and, fueled by anger and resentment, began shooting the family members, tragically killing all of them.
In a shocking turn of events, Chandan Verma was shot in the leg by police on Saturday morning. The incident occurred during a recovery operation where Sub-Inspector Madan Kumar Singh was attempting to recover the pistol found near a canal track. While inspecting the weapon, Verma allegedly snatched the Sub-Inspector’s gun and fired at him. In response, Inspector Sachchidanand Rai fired a shot at Verma, striking him in the right leg.
The accused was immediately taken to the Tiloi Community Health Centre for medical attention. This development adds another layer of complexity to the already heart-wrenching case, as the accused’s attempt to escape justice further highlights the gravity of the crime. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are working to piece together the complete timeline of events leading up to the tragic murders.
