The controversy surrounding the alleged adulteration of ghee in Tirupati laddus has taken a new turn with India’s leading dairy brand, Amul, issuing a strong denial of supplying ghee to the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam (TTD).
Amul’s statement, released on X (formerly Twitter), addresses the rumors circulating on social media that claimed the brand was the supplier of ghee to the temple. The cooperative society emphatically stated, “We wish to inform that we have never supplied Amul Ghee to TTD.” The statement further emphasizes Amul’s commitment to quality, confirming that their ghee is exclusively made from pure milk and undergoes rigorous quality checks at ISO-certified production facilities, adhering to FSSAI standards.
The controversy erupted after a lab report, commissioned by the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), claimed the presence of ‘lard’ (pig fat) in samples of Tirupati laddus. The report, dated July 16, was conducted by a Gujarat-based livestock laboratory and has sparked outrage among devotees. While the TDP alleges that the TTD switched ghee suppliers from Nandini to Amul in recent years, the dairy brand has vehemently denied any involvement in supplying ghee to the temple.
Amul’s statement aims to address the misinformation campaign against the brand and reaffirms its position as India’s most trusted ghee brand for over 50 years, deeply embedded in Indian households. The clarification comes at a time when the allegations of adulteration have cast a shadow over the sacred offerings at the Tirupati temple, raising serious concerns about the quality of food items distributed to devotees.
