Anand Mahindra, the chairman of the Mahindra Group, has addressed a widely circulated social media post that claimed he prefers driving luxury vehicles such as BMW and Mercedes over his own company’s ‘Made in India’ cars. The post, which went viral on X (formerly Twitter), questioned Mahindra’s commitment to ‘Made in India’ products in light of his alleged preference for foreign cars.
In response to the viral claim, Anand Mahindra took to X to clarify the situation. He explained that his love for Mahindra vehicles stems from his early driving experiences. His mother taught him to drive in her Premier car, nicknamed ‘BlueBird,’ and he later used a Mahindra CJ3 UV from their Kodagu home. After joining Mahindra & Mahindra in 1991, he was initially given a Hindustan Motors Contessa as a company car but quickly switched to the hard-top Armada when it became available.
Over the years, Anand Mahindra has driven a range of Mahindra vehicles, including the Bolero, Scorpio Classic, XUV 500, and currently, a red Scorpio N. He occasionally uses his wife’s silver XUV 700. He emphasized that he has never owned or used any car of another brand since the Armada.
Regarding the photo that sparked the controversy, Anand Mahindra clarified that the picture was taken at the Monterey car week during the launch of the Mahindra Battista electric hypercar. The car behind him in the photo is a classic, vintage Cisitalia designed by Pininfarina, a Mahindra company.
Through his detailed account, Anand Mahindra effectively debunked the claims of his alleged preference for foreign cars and highlighted his long-standing commitment to promoting and driving ‘Made in India’ vehicles. His response showcased his personal connection with the brand and his pride in using cars built by his own company.
