Andrea Pirlo’s time as manager of Sampdoria has come to an abrupt end after just over a year at the helm. The Serie B club announced on Thursday that they have sacked the former World Cup winner following a poor start to the season.
Sampdoria have struggled to find their footing in the lower division, securing only a single draw and suffering two defeats in their opening three matches. This dismal run leaves them second from bottom in the table, prompting the club’s board to make a change in leadership.
Pirlo, a legendary midfielder during his playing days, enjoyed a successful career with teams like AC Milan, Juventus, and the Italian national team. He won the World Cup in 2006 and achieved numerous domestic and international accolades. After retiring from playing, he transitioned into coaching, briefly managing Juventus’ under-23 team before taking over the senior squad in 2020. His spell at Juventus lasted just one season, but his experience at the highest level of Italian football made him an attractive candidate for Sampdoria.
However, his return to the Serie B has not gone as planned, and the club has decided to move in a different direction. The search for a new manager is already underway as Sampdoria aim to turn their fortunes around and challenge for promotion back to Serie A.
