Twice Wimbledon champion Andy Murray’s participation at this year’s tournament is still up in the air following back surgery. Britain’s Davis Cup captain, Leon Smith, revealed that Murray has yet to make a decision on his Wimbledon participation. Smith’s statement came after Murray underwent surgery on Saturday. The ATP initially announced Murray’s withdrawal from Wimbledon on social media, but they later removed the post. This leaves his status for the tournament uncertain.
Murray’s participation at Wimbledon would be a fitting end to his illustrious career. The Scottish star has previously hinted that he is unlikely to continue playing beyond next season. He has also recently had to contend with an ankle injury sustained at the Miami Open in March.
The ongoing issue was aggravated by Murray’s participation in this year’s French Open. The 36-year-old pulled out of the Queen’s Club Championships this week due to the injury. He was forced to withdraw from his second-round match with Jordan Thompson after trailing 4-1 in the first set, despite having achieved a milestone of 1,000 tour-level singles victories earlier in the tournament.
Murray breathed new life into his career after having hip resurfacing surgery in 2019. However, he has struggled to reach the latter stages of top tournaments since then.
Wimbledon will take place from July 1-14, while the tennis competition at the Paris Olympics will commence on July 27.
