A group of animal welfare activists in Chennai thwarted an illegal attempt to transport 57 cattle from Andhra Pradesh to slaughterhouses in Kerala on Saturday. The incident unfolded at Achiruppakkam when Sai Vignesh, an activist and founder of Almighty Animal Care Trust, noticed a truck with unusual length and water leaking from it. His suspicions were raised, and he promptly alerted the police patrol vehicle.
Police intercepted the truck before it reached a toll plaza on GST Road near Achiruppakkam. Upon inspection, they found the truck overcrowded with cattle, many of whom were visibly distressed. Sai Vignesh described the deplorable conditions the animals were subjected to, stating, “Green chilies are usually squeezed into their eyes and they are forced to board the truck.” He added, “Some of them were weak and were unable to stand. In addition, there was not enough space in the truck. Some cattle were made to stand on the ones sitting inside the truck.”
The cattle, rescued from the harrowing journey, were taken to a shelter in Tiruvallur. Authorities have registered a case of illegal trafficking against the perpetrators, underscoring the ongoing issue of animal trafficking in India. This incident highlights the vital role played by animal welfare activists in protecting vulnerable animals and bringing perpetrators to justice.
The incident underscores the urgent need for stricter regulations and enforcement measures to combat animal trafficking, which often involves cruelty and exploitation. The actions of animal welfare activists, who act as vigilant guardians of animal rights, play a crucial role in curbing this illicit trade and ensuring the well-being of animals.
