Annapurna Interactive Returns with ‘Wheel World,’ a Rebranded Indie Game from Messhof

Annapurna Interactive, the renowned publisher behind indie hits like ‘What Remains of Edith Finch’ and ‘Stray,’ has returned to the gaming scene with a new announcement: ‘Wheel World.’ This open-world cycling adventure marks the company’s first major game reveal since a significant staff exodus in September 2024, which left the future of Annapurna Interactive uncertain.

‘Wheel World’ is actually a rebranded version of a game previously known as ‘Ghost Bike,’ which was unveiled at a 2023 showcase. Developed by Messhof, the studio behind the critically acclaimed ‘Nidhogg’ series, ‘Ghost Bike’ originally depicted a cyclist navigating the afterlife after a fatal car accident. However, throughout development, Messhof decided to shift the game’s tone and gameplay, making it more lighthearted and fun. As a result, the ‘Ghost Bike’ name no longer felt appropriate.

Now reimagined as ‘Wheel World,’ the game puts players in the shoes of Kat, a cyclist on a mission to save the titular Wheel World from impending collapse. Players will engage in various races and challenges across a vibrant open world. The game’s shift in direction is reflected in its release platforms as well. ‘Wheel World’ will launch on PC, Xbox Series X/S via Game Pass, and PlayStation 5 in early 2025.

Annapurna Interactive’s announcement of ‘Wheel World’ signifies a return to form for the publisher after a period of uncertainty. The game’s unique concept and rebranding from ‘Ghost Bike’ suggest a fresh and exciting direction for Annapurna Interactive, signaling its commitment to delivering high-quality indie experiences to players worldwide.
