Anne Hathaway Reveals Awkward Chemistry Test Experience in 2000s

Anne Hathaway recently opened up about her experiences with chemistry tests in the early 2000s, describing them as outdated and uncomfortable. In a new interview with V Magazine ahead of the release of her upcoming movie ‘The Idea of You,’ Hathaway revealed that she was once required to kiss several men in order to find the perfect co-star.

Hathaway explained that back then, it was considered normal to ask actors to make out with other actors to test for chemistry. However, she found this approach to be both awkward and ineffective. “I was so young and terribly aware of how easy it was to lose everything by being labeled ‘difficult,’ so I just pretended I was excited and got on with it,” she said. “It wasn’t a power play, no one was trying to be awful or hurt me. It was just a very different time and now we know better.”

In contrast, the chemistry test for ‘The Idea of You’ was a much more respectful and naturalistic process. Hathaway, who also serves as a producer on the film, had a say in how her co-star was chosen. The actors were asked to choose a song that their character would love and then dance together with Hathaway to a short improv.

Hathaway praised this method, saying, “I was sitting in a chair like we had come in from dinner or a walk or something, we pressed play, and we just started dancing together.” Nicholas Galitzine won the part after choosing a song by Alabama Shakes to dance to with Hathaway. She described Galitzine as “so ridiculously perfect” for the role and said that there was an instant connection between them.

‘The Idea of You’ debuts on Amazon Prime Video on May 2nd. Hathaway’s full interview with V Magazine is available on their website.
