Anne Hathaway Recounts Awkward Chemistry Tests in the 2000s
Anne Hathaway has shared her experiences with chemistry tests in the film industry, recalling that in the early 2000s she was expected to ‘make out’ with multiple male actors who were auditioning opposite her. Speaking to V Magazine, Hathaway described how awkward these auditions could be, stating that she was told to ‘make out with all of them’ when auditioning for a role. She expressed her discomfort with this practice, finding it ‘gross.’
However, Hathaway emphasized that it was a ‘very different time’ and that the industry’s approach to chemistry tests has since evolved. She contrasted her past experiences with the process of finding her co-star Nicholas Galitzine for their film ‘The Idea of You.’ Instead of making out, they chose a song that Galitzine’s character would love and danced together, which Hathaway found to be a more natural and enjoyable experience.
Galitzine also shared his memories of the chemistry test, recalling the immediate connection they felt while dancing. He described the experience as ‘almost spiritual’ and said that it was ‘very easy’ to work with Hathaway.
Hathaway’s experiences and perspectives on chemistry tests shed light on the changing practices in the film industry. The emphasis on physical intimacy in the early 2000s has given way to more organic and collaborative approaches that prioritize the actors’ chemistry and connection on a personal level.
