Anthony Taylor, Stuart Attwell Selected for Euro 2024 Despite Forest Controversy

Anthony Taylor and Stuart Attwell, the officiating duo at the center of the Nottingham Forest penalty controversy, have been selected to referee at Euro 2024. This decision comes despite Forest’s vehement criticism of their performance in a Premier League match against Everton, where they were denied three penalties.

The appointments were announced by UEFA, which confirmed the list of officials for the tournament. Other English representatives include referee Michael Oliver and VAR David Coote.

The selection of Taylor and Attwell has raised eyebrows given the fallout from Forest’s loss to Everton. The club expressed its fury on social media, claiming that they had warned the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) about Attwell’s alleged bias as a Luton fan. The Football Association (FA) has since launched an investigation into the matter.

Despite the controversy, Taylor and Attwell have been given the green light to officiate at Euro 2024. The PGMOL has resisted calls to remove Attwell from refereeing duties, and he will take charge of the Fulham versus Crystal Palace match at Craven Cottage this Saturday.

Refereeing at an international tournament is considered a prestigious honor for officials. UEFA has chosen 18 referees, their assistants, and VARs for Euro 2024. Roberto Rosetti, UEFA’s managing director of refereeing, praised the selected officials for their consistent performances at the highest level.

The preparation for Euro 2024 includes a course for all chosen officials in Frankfurt, Germany, in mid-May. Referees will be based in Frankfurt during the tournament, while VARs will be stationed in Leipzig.
