Anti-Israel Encampment at University of Michigan Spreads Fringe Rhetoric
Student groups have set up an encampment on the University of Michigan campus, distributing anti-Israel materials and engaging in hostile chants.
The pamphlets, made available to students, express extremist views on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, calling for violence against Israel and the United States. One pamphlet titled, “10 Anarchist Theses on Palestine Solidarity in the United States,” goes so far as to state, “Freedom for Palestine means Death to America.”
Concerns have been raised about the spread of hate speech and glorification of violence on campus, particularly in light of the student groups’ alleged advocacy for terrorism and praise for individuals who engage in it online.
Anti-Semitic chants have also been heard at the encampment, targeting the university president and expressing support for the “Intifada,” a Palestinian term for armed resistance against Israel.
The encampment has remained in place despite concerns raised by students and faculty. The University of Michigan has not yet responded to requests for comment on the situation.
