Antigua and Barbuda Makes Strong Impression at Caribbean Week in New York

A vibrant delegation from Antigua and Barbuda, led by Minister of Tourism Hon. Charles ‘Max’ Fernandez and ABTA CEO Colin C. James, made a significant mark at the Caribbean Tourism Organization’s (CTO) Caribbean Week in New York City. Their active participation in discussions on inter-Caribbean air service, the impact of AI on travel, and media interactions at the Caribbean Media Marketplace contributed significantly to the event’s success.

The ABTA team made a notable impact by launching a new CTO initiative – the Women’s Empowerment breakfast meeting. This event, sponsored by ABTA, provided a platform for women attending Caribbean Week to connect, collaborate, and discuss their vital role in the tourism industry. CEO James opened the meeting with a prayer, and Minister Fernandez delivered inspiring remarks, encouraging women to embrace their influence and lead with purpose and passion. The Women’s Empowerment meeting was a highlight of the week, and the ABTA is committed to continuing this empowering initiative.

CEO James also made a commanding presence during a live television interview on WPIX 11, the leading station in the tri-state area. He showcased the diverse offerings of Antigua and Barbuda, emphasizing that “the beach is just the beginning” and highlighting year-round events and activities, from art festivals and sailing regattas to romantic vacations and gastronomy festivals.

Minister Fernandez’s interview, featuring Antiguan Chef Claude Lewis who prepared a seafood salad with Black Pineapple, reached an audience of 3 million viewers, further promoting the destination’s unique culinary experiences.

The ABTA also hosted a dinner meeting for twelve journalists from prominent publications, including the New York Times, Travel & Leisure, Forbes, USA Today, and Food & Wine. During the dinner, CEO James discussed recent tourism developments, while Minister Fernandez expressed gratitude for the media’s crucial role in promoting accurate and informative content about Antigua and Barbuda. He acknowledged the media’s contribution to the increase in visitor arrivals and thanked them on behalf of the tourism industry and the people of Antigua and Barbuda.

The ABTA team included USA Director Dean Fenton, Marketing Communications Executive Arah Robins, Senior Digital Marketing Manager Abena Merchant, and Digital Media Manager Sharifa George.
