Antwerp has been chosen as the hosting city for the World Tunnel Congress (WTC) 2027, which will take place from April 23 to April 29, 2027. This event marks Belgium’s debut as the host nation, underscoring its rising prominence in the global tunnel and underground construction arena.
The announcement was made during the World Tunnel Congress 2024 in Shenzhen, China, last week. The Belgian Tunnel Association (ABTUS-BVOTS), in partnership with the International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association (ITA), will spearhead the organization, with AIM Group Belgium serving as the Professional Congress Organizer (PCO).
WTC 2027 will convene over 2,700 leading experts, researchers, policymakers, and industry representatives from diverse sectors such as civil engineering, construction, transportation, and infrastructure. The gathering aims to facilitate knowledge exchange, highlight innovations, and deliberate on the future trajectory of tunnelling and underground technology.
A blend of historical heritage, modern technology, innovative engineering, and cultural significance characterizes Belgium’s underground infrastructure. The ongoing Oosterweel project, with its various tunnel complexes, has certainly been an asset in Belgium’s candidacy to host the WTC 2027. There are also numerous other examples of underground infrastructure throughout the country that have enabled the region to develop into a prosperous and thriving area over the past decades.
Antwerp Convention Bureau’s CEO, Tadeja Pivc Coudyser, said: “We are thrilled to host the World Tunnel Congress 2027 here in Antwerp. Johan Mignon and Bart De Pauw, speaking on behalf of ABTUS-BVOTS, shared their enthusiasm: “We are extremely excited about the decision to choose Belgium. The Oosterweel project, with its various tunnel complexes, has certainly been an asset in our candidacy. There are also numerous examples elsewhere in our country of underground infrastructure that have enabled our region to develop into a prosperous and thriving area over the past decades.”
Antwerp’s designation emphasizes Belgium’s pivotal position in the tunnel industry, bolstered by its remarkable infrastructure endeavors and proficiency in tunnel construction. The Congress will specifically spotlight Belgian underground initiatives like the ongoing Oosterweel project, showcasing the nation’s dedication to innovation and advancement in this domain.
Antwerp’s Deputy Mayor Koen Kennis concludes: “I am immensely proud that we will be welcoming the World Tunnel Congress to our city in 2027.
