The Last Post, a moving tribute performed before Anzac Day games, has come under fire from Brisbane radio host Greg ‘Marto’ Martin. Martin claims that the ritual has been overused and has become a “gimmick,” leading to “bugle fatigue” among fans.
While Martin acknowledges the significance of The Last Post on the original Anzac Day clash at the MCG in 1995, he believes the subsequent adoption by all AFL and NRL games has diminished its impact. He argues that the overuse of the ritual has turned it into a mere marketing tool, rather than a genuine tribute to soldiers.
Co-host Margaux Parker agreed, stating that the saturation of The Last Post has reduced its value. However, their views sparked widespread condemnation on social media, with many accusing them of disrespecting Australia’s war veterans.
Despite the controversy, AFL clubs and the league itself have embraced the tradition. Several clubs have released special Anzac-themed jumpers, with proceeds from their sale being donated to the RSL. The AFL emphasizes the importance of Anzac Day as a national occasion and encourages fans to arrive early to appreciate the pre-match ceremonies honoring the sacrifices of military personnel.
