Apple Inc. (AAPL) has reportedly delayed the mass production of its highly anticipated folding MacBook, according to a well-known analyst, Ming-Chi Kuo. Kuo, an analyst at TF Securities, announced on X (formerly Twitter) that the mass production timeline for the folding MacBook has been significantly pushed back.
Technical challenges related to the display and mechanisms have been the primary factor behind the delay. Initially, the assembly and mass production were expected to begin in the first half of 2026. However, due to these technical hurdles, the timeline has been shifted to the end of 2027 or even 2028.
Kuo also revealed that the final size of the folding MacBook will be 18.8 inches, following Apple’s decision to scrap the previously planned 20.25-inch design. He added that the folding iPad, which was initially expected to launch in 2025, is no longer on the horizon according to recent supply chain surveys. He attributed this delay to the fact that some consider the folding MacBook to be a larger version of a folding iPad.
Earlier this year, there were rumors suggesting that Apple might be abandoning the concept of foldable devices. However, a supply chain report in February indicated that the tech giant was actively working on either a foldable iPad or a foldable MacBook. In May, Kuo revealed that the foldable MacBook would feature a crease-free panel, a design goal that has significantly impacted the cost of both the panel and the hinge.
Initial estimates placed the cost of the panel and hinge at around $600–$650 and $200–$250 respectively. However, these costs are expected to decrease if production yields improve significantly by the time of mass production. The foldable MacBook is expected to be powered by Apple’s M5 series processor.
The delay in mass production signifies the challenges involved in creating a truly innovative and functional folding device. It highlights the need for meticulous design and engineering to overcome the technical obstacles that arise when transitioning from traditional displays to foldable screens.
The folding MacBook remains an intriguing prospect in the ever-evolving landscape of technology. While its arrival has been delayed, the anticipation for its eventual release continues to build. It will be interesting to see how Apple overcomes the technical challenges and ultimately delivers its take on this transformative form factor.
