Apple FineWoven Products Reportedly Discontinued

Apple’s FineWoven accessories, introduced in September 2022, could be facing discontinuation after just half a year on the market. The products, made from recycled materials as part of Apple’s environmental efforts, were touted as an eco-friendly alternative to leather iPhone cases and Apple Watch bands. However, concerns have been raised by customers and social media users about their durability and appearance, with reports of the material showing signs of wear and tear more quickly than traditional leather cases.

If Apple does decide to discontinue FineWoven, it will join a list of other short-lived Apple products that, despite initial anticipation or innovative features, failed to gain traction in the market. Notable examples include:

*

Macintosh XL (3 months):

While the Macintosh precursor Lisa had its share of challenges, the Macintosh XL, released in January 1985, faced even more difficulties. Despite strong sales initially, the line was overshadowed by the more affordable Macintosh, leading to shortages of resources and parts. Apple ran out of stock just three months later.

*

Macintosh TV (4 months):

The original Apple TV, before streaming became popular, was intended to combine personal computing with home entertainment. It featured a built-in Sony Trinitron display and various audio/video inputs. However, it failed to gain widespread adoption, and Apple discontinued it just four months after its release.

*

Power Mac G4 Cube (11 months):

Unveiled at Macworld New York in 2000, the Power Mac G4 Cube was a high-end computer housed in a futuristic acrylic cube. Despite its innovative design, it faced high pricing and various cosmetic and performance issues, resulting in slow sales. Apple discontinued it less than a year later.

*

eMate (11 months):

Before the iBook, Apple introduced the eMate, a small translucent portable Mac targeted at the education market. It offered affordability and portability but fell victim to Apple’s new direction under Steve Jobs.

*

iPod Hi-Fi (19 months):

Amid the iPod’s popularity, Apple released the iPod Hi-Fi in 2006, a high-end audio system designed for the music player. However, its large size and high price made it less appealing, and it was discontinued less than two years later, shortly after the introduction of the iPhone.
