Apple Fixes iPhone and iPad Bug Causing Deleted Photos to Reemerge

Following the release of iOS 17.5 last week, Apple faced a peculiar issue where deleted photos were reappearing on iPhones and iPads. Despite Apple’s lack of public acknowledgment, the company’s engineers promptly addressed the problem. The resolution arrived in the form of update 17.5.1, released on Monday for iPhones and iPads. The update notes mention that it offers crucial bug fixes and rectifies an uncommon issue where database-corrupted photos could resurface in the Photos library, even after deletion. Usually, photos are deleted from mobile devices for various reasons, such as selecting the best image from a series or discarding blurry or poorly lit shots. However, some users reported that deleted NSFW images were also reappearing, in some cases years after their initial removal from Apple devices. On Reddit, one user commented, “I have four pics from 2010 that keep reappearing as the latest pics uploaded to iCloud. I have deleted them repeatedly.” Another user shared a similar experience: “Same thing happened to me. Six photos from different times, all I have deleted. Some I had deleted in 2023.” MacRumors speculated that the bug could be related to “an indexing bug, photo library corruption, or a syncing issue between local devices and iCloud Photos.” They also suggested that Apple’s attempt to resolve a syncing issue in iOS 17.3 may have inadvertently “caused a new syncing issue to occur that may involve iCloud backups.” Digital Trends has reached out to Apple for further details on the issue and will provide updates as they become available.
