Apple is reportedly gearing up to enter the smart glasses market with a new pair of glasses that will pack cameras and integrate seamlessly with AirPods. This move comes as a direct challenge to Meta’s dominance in the virtual reality space, particularly the success of the recently released Quest 3 headset.
According to Bloomberg analyst and insider Mark Gurman, Apple is planning to launch these smart glasses, reminiscent of the Meta Ray-Bans, sometime in 2027. The company also has plans to release AirPods equipped with cameras, aiming to capitalize on the billions invested in the Vision Pro’s visual intelligence technology. This technology allows the device to analyze and understand the environment around the user, providing valuable data and insights.
Gurman explains that we’ll get a glimpse of this technology with an upcoming visual intelligence feature on the iPhone 16. However, Apple’s long-term vision is to bring the Vision Pro’s powerful capabilities to a wider range of products.
In addition to the smart glasses, Apple is working on a more affordable version of the Vision Pro headset, targeting a 2025 release. This cheaper model will reportedly utilize a less powerful chip and utilize more cost-effective materials.
Expect to hear more about Apple’s upcoming smart glasses, AirPods with cameras, and the cheaper Vision Pro headset in the coming months as we approach 2025. These developments signal Apple’s ambition to stake its claim in the rapidly evolving world of augmented and virtual reality.
