Apple’s upcoming 12.9-inch iPad Air will not feature the mini-LED technology that was rumored to be included, according to recent industry reports. Instead, the Air lineup, including both the 10.9-inch and 12.9-inch models, will continue to utilize LCD displays, aligning with Apple’s strategy of keeping the iPad Air more affordable than the iPad Pro line.
The decision to use LCD displays is driven by Apple’s desire to maintain a clear price distinction between the iPad Air and iPad Pro models. The mini-LED panels, which offer advantages such as increased brightness, deeper blacks, and lower power consumption, come at a higher cost, which would raise the price of the iPad Air beyond its intended budget-friendly positioning.
Despite the LCD displays, Apple is reportedly considering launching a new 12.9-inch iPad model with a mini-LED display in late 2024. This device could potentially bridge the gap between the iPad Air and iPad Pro, offering an alternative for users seeking advanced display technology at a more accessible price point.
In addition to the display differences, the upcoming iPad Air lineup is expected to receive significant updates to bring it closer to the Pro line. These upgrades could include a 12.9-inch model alongside the existing 10.9-inch version for expanded screen size options. Camera design changes are also anticipated, with a vertically oriented camera bump aligning with the user’s perspective when the device is used in landscape mode or with the Magic Keyboard.
Performance enhancements are likely to be introduced with the integration of the M2 or M3 chip, delivering increased speed and capabilities to the iPad Air. However, Apple will not release a dedicated Magic Keyboard for the iPad Air lineup, further differentiating the iPad Pro models from the Air series.
