Apple Wallet ID: How to Add Your Driver’s License or State ID

Apple has revolutionized the way we carry official identification with its Apple Wallet feature that allows you to store your driver’s license or state ID on your iPhone. Although currently only available in a handful of states, including Arizona, Colorado, Georgia, Maryland, and Ohio, Apple anticipates a wider rollout in the coming months. As more states embrace this digital ID solution, knowing how to add your information to Apple Wallet becomes crucial.

Before you begin, ensure your iPhone is running iOS 17.6 or a later version. If you plan to use your Apple Watch, make sure it has watchOS 10.3.1 or later.

While the list of states recognizing Apple Wallet IDs remains limited, Apple has outlined plans for expanding this feature to additional locations in the U.S. They are prioritizing the following states and one territory: Connecticut, Hawaii, Iowa, Kentucky, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Puerto Rico, and Utah. This suggests that widespread nationwide adoption of Wallet ID might be a future possibility.

To add your driver’s license or state ID to Apple Wallet, follow these simple steps:

1.

Open the Wallet app on your iPhone.

2.

Tap the Plus icon in the top-right corner of the screen.

3.

In the Add to Wallet menu, select Driver’s license or state ID and choose your state.

4.

If you haven’t already, you’ll be prompted to set up Face ID or Touch ID. Follow the on-screen instructions, or refer to an in-depth guide for assistance.

5.

If you own an Apple Watch, you’ll have the option to add your ID to both your iPhone and Apple Watch or just your iPhone. Select the desired option (Add to iPhone and Apple Watch or Add to iPhone only). If you don’t have an Apple Watch, simply select Continue.

6.

Place your ID on a flat surface in a well-lit room and align the edges with the edges on your phone’s screen. Your phone will automatically take a picture once it recognizes your ID. Select Continue once you have a clear picture of the front of your ID.

7.

Flip your ID over and repeat step six to capture the back of the card.

8.

Select Continue on the page informing you that additional verification is needed.

9.

Follow the on-screen instructions and position your phone as if you’re taking a selfie using the front-facing camera. You’ll be prompted to perform different movements, such as closing your eyes or moving your head left and right. Hold each position until your phone vibrates, signaling a new task. If you’re unable to complete these movements, select Accessibility options at the bottom of the screen and follow the prompts. Once finished, select Continue.

10.

You’ll be asked to take a selfie using the front-facing camera. Aim for a similar expression to the one in your driver’s license or state ID photo. Select Continue after taking the selfie.

11.

Review the photos you’ve taken. If everything looks good, select Continue with Face ID. If not, retake the photos and continue once you’re satisfied.

12.

Select Agree on the terms and conditions page. Your request will be sent to your state authority for confirmation.

Once you’ve completed these steps, Apple will send your information to your state’s motor vehicles department. The process of confirming your ID typically takes a few minutes. Once confirmed, your new ID will appear in the Wallet app. You can use it at select airport terminals by opening your Apple Wallet and selecting your iPhone or Apple Watch, similar to using Apple Wallet for credit or debit card payments.
