Apple Watch Series 10 Debuts with Sleep Apnea Detection, Aiming to Improve Health

Apple has unveiled the latest addition to its popular smartwatch lineup – the Apple Watch Series 10, making its debut at the “Its Glowtime” event held at Apple Park, California. The highlight of this new iteration is its ability to detect sleep apnea, a serious health condition affecting over a billion people globally. With over 80% of sleep apnea cases going undiagnosed, this feature could play a crucial role in promoting early detection and treatment.

Sleep apnea is a common disorder characterized by repeated interruptions in breathing during sleep. This happens when the airway becomes blocked, preventing sufficient oxygen intake. The condition can lead to excessive daytime sleepiness, impaired cognitive function, and an increased risk of various health problems such as high blood pressure, heart disease, and type 2 diabetes.

The Apple Watch Series 10 utilizes the accelerometer to monitor breathing disturbances while the user sleeps. This data is then analyzed using advanced machine learning algorithms, allowing the watch to identify potential sleep apnea symptoms. If the data consistently indicates moderate to severe sleep apnea, the watch will alert the user. This proactive approach aims to encourage individuals to consult a healthcare professional for a proper diagnosis and discuss potential treatment options.

Beyond sleep apnea detection, the Apple Watch Series 10 retains features from its predecessor, including notifications for atrial fibrillation (AFib) and medication reminders. The smartwatch also boasts a redesigned user interface with softened corners and a wider OLED display, providing a more immersive experience. Apple claims that this is the largest display ever offered on a standard Apple Watch model, and it is 40% brighter than its predecessor. The watch is also thinner than previous models, measuring just 9.7mm. The aluminum frame has been polished and infused with silicone nanoparticles, giving it a sleek and durable finish.

For those seeking a more premium option, Apple has also introduced a titanium version of the Apple Watch Series 10, which is reportedly lighter than the stainless-steel Series 9 model. Under the hood, the watch is powered by a new S10 chipset, which is said to be 30% smaller and incorporates a four-core neural engine for enhanced performance. The built-in speaker now supports playing music and podcasts directly from the watch. The Apple Watch Series 10 also offers water resistance up to 50 meters. Apple highlights the watch’s fast charging capabilities, claiming that it can reach 80% charge in just 30 minutes.

The Apple Watch Series 10 is available for pre-order starting today, with the official launch date set for September 20. Pricing starts at Rs 46,900 for the 42mm GPS variant and Rs 56,900 for the LTE version. The titanium variant is available in both 42mm and 46mm sizes, priced at Rs 79,900 and Rs 84,000, respectively.
