Vogue Runway editors Laia Garcia-Furtado and José Criales-Unzueta are back with another summer-time trend test. After successfully styling a backwards shirt, they’re taking on the apron. This season, the humble kitchen staple has received a high-fashion makeover, appearing on the spring 2024 runways of designers like Hermès, Christian Dior, and Ann Demeulemeester.
José Criales-Unzueta starts with a Duckie Brown apron-esque piece, featuring billowing sleeves and a fabric that screams summer holiday. He finds it difficult to style for everyday wear, opting to save it for the beach.
Laia Garcia-Furtado embraces a vintage cotton and lace apron, inspired by the “downstairs” crew of a postpartum TV show she watched. Initially, she attempts to style it with jeans, but finds the look too literal and “apron-y.”
José suggests pairing the apron with jorts, creating a more intentional look. He questions whether the white-on-white combination needs a black or colorful shoe to break up the matchiness.
Laia, inspired by José’s suggestion, tries pairing the apron with her favorite giant cotton shorts and black Mary Janes. She feels the lace trim of the apron blends nicely with the lace trim of the shorts, creating a cohesive and wearable look.
José agrees, praising the “studied” intention of the all-white ensemble. The black shoes ground the look, adding a touch of sophistication. He believes this pairing is the winning formula.
Both editors agree that the apron can indeed be styled for real life, proving that this runway trend can be translated into everyday wear with the right styling. Laia is so confident in the look that she plans to wear it during New York Fashion Week.
