The Arizona Diamondbacks have claimed left-handed reliever Joe Jacques off waivers from the Boston Red Sox on Tuesday. The move comes after the Red Sox designated Jacques for assignment on Friday to make room on the 40-man roster for rookie Cam Booser.
Jacques, 29, appeared in just one game for Boston this year, allowing one run on three hits and one hit by pitch while striking out two in 1 ⅔ inning. He appeared in 23 games for Boston last year and posted a 5.06 ERA (26 ⅔ innings, 15 earned runs).
The Red Sox now have four lefty relievers — Booser, Joely Rodríguez, Brennan Bernardino and Brandon Walter — on the 40-man roster. Booser, Rodríguez and Bernardino are all on the active roster. Walter is on Triple-A Worcester’s IL with a rotator cuff strain. Lefty reliever Chris Murphy is on the 60-day IL (and out for the season) after undergoing Tommy John surgery.
Jacques was originally a Pirates 33rd round pick in 2018 out of Manhattan College. Boston initially acquired Jacques from the Pirates in the minor league phase of the 2022 Rule 5 Draft.
