In a much-anticipated clash between two of the most promising MLB prospects, No. 2 Arkansas and pitcher Hagen Smith emerged victorious against No. 3 Florida and its star pitcher, Jac Caglianone.
Caglianone, who has hit 25 home runs in 40 games with a batting average over .400, is considered one of the top prospects in this year’s MLB draft. However, it was Smith, ranked as the No. 6 prospect in this summer’s draft, who stole the show on Friday night.
Smith showcased his dominance on the mound, striking out an impressive 11 batters over seven innings. Despite Florida’s efforts to score during Smith’s time on the mound, their only run came from an error, resulting in an unearned run. Smith’s impressive performance marked his eighth double-digit strikeout game of the season and his ninth quality start. Notably, his ERA now stands at a stellar 1.35 through 60 innings pitched.
While Arkansas’ offense was limited to three hits, a solo home run by Ryder Helfrick and a sac fly by Jared Sprague-Lott proved to be enough to secure the 2-1 victory and improve their record to 36-6.
The Hogs and Gators will face off again in a doubleheader on Saturday to determine the series winner. The highly anticipated first game is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET and will be broadcast on SEC Network+.
