A Salt Lake County man, 24-year-old Carlos Anthony Martinez, has been charged with multiple violent crimes after allegedly committing armed robberies at a dollar store and a jewelry business.
On May 6, 2023, Martinez allegedly robbed a dollar store employee in Grantsville at gunpoint, taking money and merchandise. Just over three weeks later, on May 26, 2023, he is accused of entering Fred Meyer Jewelers inside Smith’s Marketplace in Bountiful, carrying a hatchet in one hand and a handgun in the other. According to the Department of Justice, Martinez smashed the top of a glass display case with the hatchet and stole jewelry, fleeing the store and leaving the hatchet behind.
Bountiful Police officers responded to the scene and searched for Martinez, eventually arresting him on April 15. Martinez has been charged with interference with commerce by robbery, and using, carrying, and brandishing a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence.
Martinez’s alleged actions have raised concerns about the safety of businesses and employees in the area. The charges against him underscore the seriousness of the crimes he is accused of committing.
