Arne Slot, the manager of Feyenoord, has emerged as a leading candidate to take over as Liverpool’s manager after Jurgen Klopp. Talks are underway to get Slot out of his contract in the Netherlands, with a compensation offer being made. Slot has a strong track record of success with Feyenoord, winning the league and cup in the past two years. He is said to be keen on a move to Liverpool and could bring some of his staff with him. The Dutchman’s playing style is seen as a major draw for Liverpool, who believe it is similar to Klopp’s philosophy. Slot was previously on the radar of Tottenham and Chelsea but opted to stay in Rotterdam. Feyenoord has performed well this season but is likely to miss out on the Eredivisie title to PSV. Liverpool will enter a new era next season, and Klopp will not have the fairytale ending he had hoped for, as the Premier League title now seems out of reach. After winning the Carabao Cup earlier this season, the German had hoped to leave as a quadruple winner. However, Liverpool has since been eliminated from the FA Cup and the Europa League, and their league hopes suffered a major setback with a defeat at Everton in the Merseyside derby.
Klopp apologized to the fans after his final derby match did not go as planned. He said: “I really feel for the people. I am really sorry for that. People told me so often what a great record we have in the derby. We never lost here before and it feels really different. I really apologize for that. It was unnecessary but it happened. I have no good thoughts at all. Very disappointed and frustrated. It was not good enough.”
