Arsenal has made a significant move to bolster its defense by signing Italian defender Riccardo Calafiori from Bologna on a long-term contract. The Premier League club announced the acquisition on Monday, although the financial details of the transfer were not disclosed. However, Italian and British media reports suggest that Arsenal will pay Bologna approximately 40 million euros (43.26 million USD) plus an additional five million in add-on fees.
Calafiori’s arrival at the Emirates Stadium comes after a standout season at Bologna under manager Thiago Motta. The 22-year-old played a pivotal role in Bologna’s historic campaign, which saw them finish fifth in the Serie A standings and qualify for the Champions League for the first time since 1964. His impressive performances earned him 30 Serie A appearances last season, having previously joined Bologna from AS Roma.
Calafiori’s talent extends beyond club football. He made his international debut for Italy in June and featured in three of the four matches during the European Championship. This achievement made him the second-youngest Italian to participate in the Euros, trailing only the legendary Paolo Maldini.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta expressed his delight at securing Calafiori’s signature, highlighting his key qualities. “We welcome Riccardo and his family to Arsenal. He is a great signing and gives us huge strength to reinforce our defence,” Arteta stated. “Riccardo is a big personality and character, with specific skills which will make us stronger as we push to win major trophies,” he added. “We’re looking forward to working with Riccardo, integrating him into the squad, and supporting him in the years to come.”
Arsenal’s Premier League campaign kicks off on August 17 with a clash against Wolverhampton Wanderers. With the arrival of Calafiori, Arsenal fans are eagerly anticipating the new season and the impact the young defender will have on the team’s defensive solidity and overall ambitions.
