## Art Week Tokyo: A Celebration of Contemporary Art in the Capital
Art Week Tokyo (AWT) is a highly anticipated event that celebrates the dynamic and diverse world of contemporary art in Tokyo. From November 7th to 10th, 53 museums, galleries, and art institutions across the city will open their doors to showcase their latest exhibitions, creating a vibrant tapestry of artistic expression. Exploring Tokyo’s Art Scene
One of the most appealing aspects of AWT is its decentralized nature. Instead of a single main venue, the event spans across the city, encouraging exploration and discovery. Visitors can hop on the free AWT shuttle bus, connecting them to various participating venues. This unique format allows attendees to delve into the heart of Tokyo’s diverse art scene, encountering a vast range of artistic styles and perspectives.
A Feast for the Senses
From renowned masters to emerging artists, AWT offers a rich tapestry of art experiences. At the Mori Art Museum, a monumental retrospective of the iconic artist Louise Bourgeois will be unveiled after 27 years. The National Art Center will simultaneously host individual exhibitions dedicated to the pop art maestro, Keizo Shikishi, and the performance artist, Arakawa Nash. Artisan Museum will feature a collaboration between the 2024 Venice Biennale Japan Pavilion representative artist, Yuko Mori, and the Ishibashi Foundation Collection.
Other highlights include the Takahashi Ryuzo Collection at the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum, showcasing the largest contemporary art collection in Japan. The Ginza Maison Hermès Forum will present an installation by Rei Naito, while Shiseido Gallery will host a solo exhibition by Shiori Watanabe, focusing on the theme of water. This diverse selection ensures a unique and engaging experience for every visitor.

AWT is not just about exhibitions. The event also features a series of exciting events and experiences. In South Aoyama, a unique pop-up space called AWT Bar will be open during the entire duration of the festival. Designed by landscape architect Hideko Tomura, the bar creates a harmonious blend of nature and urban life. Food will be curated by Miya Enmei-ji of EMMÉ in Aoyama, a recipient of the “Goût et Millesimes 2023” award for Best Pastry Chef. The menu features a delightful selection of pastries inspired by flowers, including a “New Gobo and Bacon Cake Sale” and a “Tatan Mont Blanc.” Visitors can also enjoy cocktails specially designed in collaboration with three participating artists: Arakawa Nash, Akio Koizumi, and Tsutae.
Thought-Provoking Discussions
AWT also hosts a series of symposiums and online talks. This year, Susanne Pfeffer, Director of the Museum of Modern Art Frankfurt (MMK), will deliver the keynote speech at the symposium. Online content includes insightful dialogues between Takashi Murakami and Nobuyoshi Araki, Yuko Mori and Min Wong, as well as a lecture by art historian Izumi Nakajima. These discussions offer valuable insights into the contemporary art landscape and provide a deeper understanding of the works on display.
