On Monday, officials revealed that the cake which tragically led to the death of a 10-year-old girl in Punjab’s Patiala last month contained a high concentration of artificial sweetener. The girl’s entire family fell ill after consuming the cake, which had been purchased online from a bakery for her birthday.
A report showed that the cake contained a high level of saccharine, a sweet-tasting systematic compound. While small amounts of saccharine are used in baking, high levels can quickly increase blood glucose levels.
Officials stated that action will be taken against the bakery after an FIR was filed against its owner. In response to the incident, the food ordering platform Zomato banned the bakery owner and delisted the bakery from its platform.
