Aruba Airport Receives Prestigious Green Airport Recognition for Sustainability Leadership

Aruba Airport Authority (AAA) is proud to announce that Queen Beatrix International Airport has received the inaugural ACI-LAC Green Airport Recognition, a prestigious honor that celebrates exceptional leadership in sustainability. This landmark achievement underscores the airport’s unwavering commitment to environmental best practices and its role in reducing aviation’s impact on the planet.

The award, granted by the Airport Council International (ACI), recognizes airports that have demonstrated outstanding achievements in environmental initiatives. AAA’s Director of Health and Sustainability, Angeline Flemming, proudly accepted the award on behalf of the Airport Authority and the entire airport community.

The ACI-LAC Green Airport Recognition program, established by ACI, focuses on promoting environmental best practices within the Latin American and Caribbean region. In 2024, ACI-LAC encouraged airports to submit projects showcasing their commitment to the Circular Economy, a key pillar of sustainable development. This category emphasizes efforts to optimize water and energy use, extend the life cycle of materials and products, and minimize waste generation.

Aruba Airport’s dedication to sustainability is deeply ingrained in its operations, with sustainable principles woven throughout three key areas: sustainable aviation, sustainable operations, and a sustainable airport community. This holistic approach ensures that environmental considerations are integrated at every level of airport activity.

One of the cornerstones of AAA’s sustainability strategy is the Gateway 2030 Phase 1A Terminal Expansion project. This ambitious project is not only addressing capacity challenges but also enhancing the airport’s infrastructure to deliver a world-class experience for travelers. The design and construction of this expansion prioritize environmentally responsible practices, ensuring a highly efficient and cost-effective facility.

Looking ahead, Aruba Airport is intensifying its data collection and monitoring efforts to gain a comprehensive understanding of its sustainability performance. This data will be instrumental in developing even more robust environmental management plans, particularly in areas such as sustainable waste management. The airport is also poised to launch new initiatives focused on improving waste handling, disposal, and recycling practices.

With various sustainability certifications guiding current and future projects, Aruba Airport serves as an inspiring example for other organizations, both nationally and regionally. The airport’s commitment to sustainability is not only a testament to its environmental responsibility but also a key driver for a brighter, more sustainable future for the aviation industry.
