Charith Asalanka’s unbeaten half-century proved to be the catalyst for Sri Lanka’s dominant five-wicket victory over the West Indies in the second One Day International (ODI) on Wednesday. This resounding win secured a 2-0 series lead for Sri Lanka, with one match remaining. The match, played at the Pallekele International Stadium, saw a rain-delayed start, resulting in a reduced 44 overs per side.
Asalanka, the captain, won the toss and opted to bowl first. Sri Lanka’s bowlers delivered a remarkable performance, dismissing West Indies for a paltry 189 runs in 36 overs. While the West Indies initially struggled, a valiant 119-run partnership between Sherfane Rutherford and Gudakesh Motie for the ninth wicket propelled them to a respectable total. Rutherford’s aggressive batting, characterized by four sixes and seven boundaries, was a highlight, despite dropping two catches. Motie, batting at number 10, achieved his maiden international half-century, remaining unbeaten on 50 off 61 deliveries.
Wanindu Hasaranga was the standout bowler for Sri Lanka, claiming impressive figures of 4-40. Spinners Maheesh Theekshana and seamer Asitha Fernando also made significant contributions, each picking up three wickets.
Sri Lanka’s chase began with a shaky start, losing two wickets for only 25 runs. However, openers Nishan Madushka (38) and Sadeera Samarawickrama (38) stabilized the innings with a crucial 62-run partnership for the third wicket. A subsequent 55-run stand between Asalanka and Janith Liyanage (24) brought Sri Lanka closer to victory. Asalanka, with his composed batting, remained unbeaten on 62 off 61 deliveries, including a six and seven boundaries.
The West Indies bowlers, despite taking early wickets, couldn’t contain the Sri Lankan momentum. Alzarri Joseph was the most successful West Indies bowler, taking 2-30. The final match of the series is scheduled for Saturday at the same venue.
