Foreign ministers of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) gathered in Laos on Saturday and issued a joint communique condemning violence against civilians in military-ruled Myanmar. They urged all parties involved in the conflict to end hostilities and adhere to the agreed-upon peace plan.
Beyond the situation in Myanmar, ASEAN welcomed unspecified practical measures aimed at reducing tension in the South China Sea and preventing accidents or miscalculations. The communique also expressed concern over North Korea’s recent missile tests, labeling them as worrisome developments.
Furthermore, ASEAN called for peaceful resolutions to the ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza, expressing deep concern over the dire humanitarian situation and the alarming number of casualties in both regions.
