Ravichandran Ashwin, the Indian all-rounder, has revealed that his ability to compartmentalize his bowling and batting skills has been instrumental in his recent batting success. Speaking after his sixth Test century, which came in Chennai against Bangladesh, Ashwin emphasized that he is enjoying his game more than ever before.
Ashwin explained that the key to his batting success lies in separating the two disciplines mentally. “Bowling and batting are very separate sports in the same game. One is done consciously and the other subconsciously. For me to compartmentalize both has taken its own due time,” he stated.
He shared that when he walks into the batting crease, his focus shifts entirely to settling down his game. “The one thing I keep telling myself now is to watch the ball hard. The mind can play tricks because I am a bowler who plays 12, 18, and 24 balls ahead when I am sequencing it. As a batter, I shouldn’t do that. It’s more about focusing on the ball and hitting it as I see it,” Ashwin explained.
Reflecting on his journey, Ashwin admitted that he was under immense pressure a few years ago. “I used to be critical, but not anymore. I have put a lot of pressure on myself, and people have put pressure on me. I used to be happy about it. The most important thing for me is to enjoy my cricket. I want to play cricket with a smile on my face,” he shared.
The all-rounder’s current contentment stems from a promise he made to himself. “A few years ago, I promised myself that I would not respond to anyone and that I would play for my happiness. I have been keeping that promise so far. It just happened. You don’t plan for such things.” Ashwin said.
He expressed his admiration for his teammate Ravindra Jadeja, highlighting Jadeja’s talent and ability to maximize his potential. “Jaddu is one cricketer who has evolved so nicely. I always envy him. He is so gifted and talented. He has found ways to maximize his potential and keeps it simple. I wish I could be like him, but I am glad I am myself.”
Ashwin acknowledged the growth they’ve shared as players. “Watching him bat over the last couple of years has given me insight into how better I can be. Both of us have grown together. Both of us have done some special things. We value one another at this stage and enjoy each other’s success more than ever.”
Looking ahead, Ashwin expressed his desire to continue to improve in both batting and bowling. “Honestly, at this point in my career, I want to be good on that day and probably be my best. I am content with what has happened.” He stated.
Ashwin’s ability to compartmentalize his skills and his renewed focus on enjoying the game have led to his recent success. As he continues to evolve as a player, his commitment to his own happiness seems to be paying off in the form of outstanding performances on the field.
