In a significant move for the Islamic tourism industry, the Asia Islamic Tourism & Trade Expo (AITEX) has rebranded as the World Islamic Tourism & Trade Expo (WITEX). This decision, announced at the recent Minister and CEOs Summit at AITEX 2024, reflects the expanding global influence of Islamic tourism and the need for a unified platform to cater to its unique requirements.
The rebranding, proposed by Mr. Shahid Yousuf Adam of Orient Travel Zambia, was unanimously supported by industry leaders and CEOs. It symbolizes a transition from a regional focus to a global one, recognizing the vast potential of Islamic tourism worldwide.
The World Islamic Tourism & Trade Expo (WITEX) will serve as a comprehensive platform for industry leaders to come together, discuss, collaborate, and innovate. This will drive the future of Islamic tourism on a global scale, fostering growth and development within the sector.
The rebranding received strong support from countries like Cambodia, the Philippines, Brunei, Thailand, Singapore, Zambia, Egypt, Indonesia, and Uzbekistan. These nations emphasized the importance of a unified global platform that can effectively address the specific needs of Islamic travelers and businesses.
Building upon the success of AITEX, which has become a key event in the Islamic tourism calendar, WITEX will broaden its appeal and accessibility to a global audience, attracting exhibitors, trade buyers, and visitors from around the world.
Dato’ Dr. Mohd Khalid Harun, President of the Malaysian Tourism Agency Association (MATA), highlighted the significance of this change, stating, “Islamic tourism is no longer confined to a single region. It is a dynamic, global industry that requires a platform capable of representing its diverse interests. World Islamic Tourism & Trade Expo (WITEX) will be that platform, bringing together the world’s leading voices in Islamic tourism and trade.”
The World Islamic Tourism & Trade Expo (WITEX) will continue to be held at the Sunway Resort Hotel in Bandar Sunway, Selangor, from August 22 to 24, 2025. This reflects Malaysia’s ongoing commitment to being a central hub for Islamic tourism. The event is expected to attract even greater participation from international exhibitors and delegates, further solidifying its position as a leading global event.
WITEX will feature a comprehensive program, including high-level conferences, trade exhibitions, networking sessions, and award ceremonies. The focus will remain on showcasing the latest trends, products, and services in Islamic tourism and trade, while fostering meaningful discussions on the challenges and opportunities within the industry.
The rebranding of AITEX to WITEX marks a new era for the Islamic tourism industry. Positioned as the world’s leading event in Islamic tourism and trade, WITEX is poised to play a pivotal role in shaping the industry’s future, providing a truly global platform for industry players to connect, collaborate, and create lasting impacts. With this historic resolution, WITEX is set to reflect the growing importance of Islamic tourism on the global stage and its potential to drive economic growth and cultural exchange worldwide.
