Aslan Energy Capital, a Singapore-based company focused on renewable energy, and PT Calypte Sugi Power, an Indonesian firm dedicated to developing power generation in Sugi Island, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on a significant solar power project. This partnership marks a key step towards establishing a sustainable energy value chain in Indonesia’s Riau Islands Province.
The ambitious project aims to develop a large-scale solar power hub on Sugi Island, with an initial target of 1 GW of solar power production by the third quarter of 2026. The companies have set their sights even higher, aiming for a combined capacity of 2 GW by the fourth quarter of 2027. This ambitious plan leverages the favorable conditions for clean energy development on Sugi Island, with its flat terrain and ample solar irradiance.
Dr. Muthu Chezhian, CEO of Aslan Energy Capital, highlighted the strategic importance of the Sugi Power Hub for their group’s overall sustainable energy portfolio. He emphasized the island’s unique geography and conditions, making it an ideal location to establish a sustainable power generation hub. The project aligns with the ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) goals and SDG (Sustainable Development Goals) targets of the Riau Province and Indonesia’s wider ambition to become a leader in green energy within Southeast Asia.
Mr. Han Fook Kwang, Chief Development Director of PT Calypte Sugi Power, expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership with Aslan Energy Capital. He emphasized the careful selection process undertaken to identify a suitable development partner, highlighting Aslan Energy Capital’s corporate vision, team experience, and understanding of the Indonesian market as key factors in their decision. Feasibility studies have been completed with encouraging results, and the project is advancing with detailed project engineering in the coming months, with a final investment decision (FID) targeted for the second quarter of 2025.
