Assam CM’s ‘Flood Jihad’ Accusations Against University Backfire as it Earns National Recognition

The University of Science and Technology (USTM) in Meghalaya has achieved a significant milestone, becoming the only private university in the Northeast region to be included in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2024. This recognition, announced by the Union Ministry of Education earlier this week, holds special significance considering the recent controversy surrounding the university.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has leveled serious accusations against USTM, alleging that it is responsible for flooding in Guwahati due to its alleged involvement in what he terms ‘flood jihad’. Sarma’s accusations have been highly contentious, claiming that the university is intentionally altering the environment through construction projects on its campus. He further criticized the university’s architecture, stating that its gates resemble Mecca, the holiest site in Islam. This accusation led to Sarma threatening to take legal action against the university through the National Green Tribunal (NGT).

USTM, founded in 2008 by the Education Research and Development Foundation, has been vocal in refuting these accusations. Its Chancellor, Mahbubul Hoque, has maintained his focus on the university’s mission, emphasizing its dedication to education and student development. He addressed the recent recognition during a short celebration at the university, drawing a poignant comparison between the achievement and the accusations. Hoque remarked, “Sometimes when your eyes burn, doesn’t it feel good when water is put on it?” This statement served as a powerful reminder of the university’s commitment to academic excellence despite the negativity it has faced.

The university’s inclusion in NIRF 2024 is a testament to its commitment to quality education and its strong academic standing. This recognition has further amplified the debate surrounding the accusations of ‘flood jihad’ and highlights the potential for political agendas to overshadow the achievements of educational institutions. The university’s journey is a powerful reminder of the resilience of academic institutions in the face of adversity and underscores the importance of separating political rhetoric from the pursuit of knowledge and excellence.
