## Assan Alüminyum Acquires Solar Power Plant to Supercharge Sustainability Efforts
Assan Alüminyum, a global leader in the production of flat-rolled aluminum, has taken a significant stride towards its sustainability goals. The company has acquired a solar power plant located in Karaman, Turkey, bolstering its commitment to renewable energy and carbon reduction. This strategic move underscores Assan Alüminyum’s dedication to building a more sustainable future.
The newly acquired solar plant, spanning a substantial 11.37 hectares, boasts an impressive installed clean energy generation capacity of 10 MWp. This acquisition aligns perfectly with the company’s recently unveiled Decarbonization Roadmap, which outlines an ambitious target of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. This solar power plant will play a crucial role in realizing key milestones outlined in the roadmap, significantly reducing Assan Alüminyum’s carbon footprint by offsetting Scope 2 market-based emissions.
Göksal Güngör, General Manager of Assan Alüminyum, highlighted the importance of renewable energy in the company’s overall strategy, stating, “With this solar power plant, we are taking another crucial step towards expanding our renewable energy portfolio and minimizing our carbon emissions. Our mission is to ‘produce the future without wasting it,’ and this acquisition reflects our unwavering commitment to lowering our carbon intensity, contributing to a circular economy.”
This acquisition further solidifies Assan Alüminyum’s leadership in sustainability. The company already operates a hydroelectric renewable energy facility in Manavgat, Turkey, which generates clean energy close to the company’s annual electricity consumption. By strategically leveraging renewable energy sources, along with the generation and purchasing of International Renewable Energy Certificates (I-REC), Assan Alüminyum effectively offsets its Scope 2 market-based emissions.
Beyond renewable energy, Assan Alüminyum actively implements energy efficiency projects, leading to substantial reductions in natural gas and electricity consumption. The company’s dedication to sustainability has been recognized globally, earning them the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) Performance Standard Certificate for both its production and recycling facilities. This recognition underscores their commitment to environmentally responsible practices across their operations.
Assan Alüminyum’s unwavering commitment to sustainability has attracted significant financial support. The company recently secured a $90 million green financing package from the International Finance Corporation (IFC), marking a significant milestone. This 100% climate-labeled green loan makes Assan Alüminyum the first company in its sector to achieve this distinction, further demonstrating their commitment to environmental responsibility.
With its core values of reliability, flexibility, innovation, and sustainability firmly embedded in its operations, Assan Alüminyum continues to contribute to both the economy and the environment. This acquisition marks another step forward on their journey towards a more sustainable future, demonstrating their commitment to building a better world for generations to come.
